The East Pavilion of the Groninger Museum is part of a larger museum complex, designed by several architects. The concept is based on the idea of unfolding positive and negative space. A differentiated exhibition space was created, which allows artworks to be viewed from many different levels and vantage points. A new design process involving computer digitizing allowed the precise translation of the concept model into the finished building. Constructed like the hull of a ship, the steel plates of the East Pavilion were built by shipbuilders rather than ordinary building contractors because of their higher flexibility and lower cost.
