Security begins at home

IT-related security breaches cost UK businesses several billion pounds each year. As a result, millions of pounds and thousands of ساعة of effort are spent trying to make systems secure from external threats.

But while organisations put in firewalls and anti-virus software to counter outside dangers, many are leaving themselves wide open to risks from inside their own companies. Nearly half of large companies claim their worst security breach was caused by an insider, according to a Department of Trade and Industry-sponsored report. And the number of employee-related security incidents is growing.

Vetting all staff, but particularly IT staff, is key. Increasing staff turnover, changing staff roles and the use of contract staff all show up security weaknesses. The July/August issue of MIS UK will look at how to successfully vet your staff, both full-time and contractors, and existing employees as well as new staff. We also explain how best to manage system security risks and protect yourself if something does go wrong, through insurance, outsourcing and technical mitigation.

Do you have a view? MIS UK is always on the lookout for controversial opinion pieces from its readers. If you have an axe to grind, you can get in touch at misuk@fairfaxbm.com.

Our June issue is online at www.misweb.com/uk. Find out how to change your business without alienating your staff, how wireless could help your organisation and whether the Death of the IT Director has been greatly exaggerated.
