How To Choose a College Major

Choosing a college major will be one of the most important things you do in your life. When it comes to picking your profession for the rest of your life, it becomes pretty serious business. College majors have expanded these days. You do not have to become a doctor or a lawyer; there are many other options.

Let’s look at some things to consider first before choosing a major.

**What do you want to be when you grow up?

This is a question we hear all too often when we are growing up. Every child has a dream. The fact is, some children do grow up to accomplish their dreams. If you have always wanted to be a dentist from the time you were small and the passion still resides with you today, then by all means, your mind is probably made up. It is also important to view these choices realistically. Often these professions are huge ones that take a lot of schooling. You may want to become a veterinarian, but the only school for that in your state did not accept you. This does not mean you are not smart and worthy of an incredible career; it just means that the field is extremely competitive and few will get into the program.

**What are your interests?

What are the things you like to do most? This is by far the most important thing to remember when you are choosing a college major! If you choose a college major that you are passionate about, that will lead to a career that you are passionate about, and a happy life. There are so many things to consider. Let’s take this example. A girl grows up and all through high school, shopping is her main priority. She is always dressing the best and coming up with the newest and most creative outfits at school. She is always starting trends. To most, this girl probably seems like your typical fashion- and popularity-obsessed teenager, when in fact you should be seeing a future fashion apparel design major at the nearest college. Do you love to write? Major in journalism. Do you love to draw? Major in art. Do you love kids? Become a teacher. Do you love collecting rocks? Become a geologist!

**Consult a career counselor.

If you choose to wait until you get a few months or even years into college before choosing a major, it may be a good idea to go and see a career counselor. They can often provide you with literature and booklets on different majors and what careers you can have with them.
**How much will that profession pay?

Only considering the amount of money you will make will most likely get you into a major that you do not enjoy. This will lead to a job you do not enjoy! Your interest is always first priority! Of course we all want to make top dollar, but the saying that you cannot always put a price on happiness is true. It would be a shame to attend college for four years for something you end up not enjoying.

**Take your time!!

You do not have to choose a major as soon as you get to college. In fact, if you are organized enough, you can wait until your sophomore or even the beginning of your junior year. Most colleges will make you take some university-required courses. These courses are in order to make the students more well-rounded, so they often provide a lot of different experiences for them. Consider taking some of these courses first, especially if you are unsure of your decision.

Choosing your college major does not have to be hard, it just has to be well thought-out! Good luck!

How To Determine the Best College Majors

Going off to college can be an exciting time. For many of you, it will be your first real chance at independence. You will be able to live on your own and make decisions you never would have been able to make otherwise. Of course, going to college can be very stressful in some respects as well. Not only will you have to decide which college you want to go to (and hope you are accepted to), but you will need to decide what you want to major in.

Choosing a major can be difficult for many students because this generally signifies what a person will be doing with the rest of his life. With such a large choice, it is no wonder you will be uncertain.

There are many tips that can help you pick the major that best suits you. It is going to be necessary that you have some idea of what you want to do, but these tips will help to make sure you are not flip-flopping majors, and wasting exorbitant amounts of money in the process.

Look at the things you love to do. **

One of the best ways to pick a college major is going to be by choosing something that you love to do. If you are extremely interested in acting and have always wanted to be on stage, then becoming a theater major would make sense. Likewise, if you have been able to work a computer since before you could talk, then you might want to look into a job where working on computers is a large part of your profession.

Do your homework.

Part of choosing a college major is going to be looking into the classes you will need to take. If you love computers but hate computer classes, you may not be suited for a computer major.

There are numerous reasons why it is important to look at your schedule requirements. You may not want to have to go through all the things necessary to get a degree in a certain field, you may not like the classes, or they might just be too hard or demanding for you. Whatever the reason, it is going to be important and less expensive for you to determine these things before you enter college rather than during.

Talk to the students on campus.**

When you go to check out the campus, attempt to speak with some students that are pursuing majors that you are interested in. By doing this, you will have a chance to find the most honest information about what this major is going to be like for you. You will have a chance to learn about the classes, the professors and the amount of time you will be working and studying for your degree.

Speak with your high school career counselor.

Your high school’s career counselor is going to be able to give you a wealth of information on a number of different career topics. Not only will they be able to help you determine which majors might be right for you, but they should also have information about the requirements for most colleges.

They can let you know what your GPA needs to be and what test scores are needed for you to apply and be accepted at the college of your choice.

Take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). **

The MBTT and other similar tests like it will help you to figure out interests you may not have realized you have. The MBTI will determine your temperament and your personality when you answer the series of questions that are provided. At the end of the test, you will learn which one of the four temperaments you are and which one of the sixteen personality types you are.

This information will tell you what kind of jobs will bring you happiness and success, so they are worth looking at. While they may not be 100% accurate, they may help shed some light on some of your interests and bring some new possibilities to your life.

How To Adapt to Life in College Dorms

As you enter your first year of college, you are bound to encounter personal anxiety over the new place, new home, and new friends—don’t worry, you are not alone. Every college freshman experiences some level of nervousness when they start their college adventure. Here are some tips to make your adjustment to life in the dorms easier.

Remember you are not alone.

You are not the only new kid on the block. Every person in your freshman dorm is in the same situation as you. This is a great way to bond with new friends—talk to other freshman in your dorm about your own fears and anxieties. Chances are, they are feeling the same way and will be glad to have someone to talk to about it.

Participate in orientation activities.

Every college that has on-campus housing for freshmen has some kind of orientation program for them. Yes, it may seem like a lame thing to do, but it is a great way to meet other new students. The people who run the orientation program are generally upper-classmen who were in your shoes recently—they can serve as an excellent resource for you. Don’t be afraid to go to all of the orientation activities, they are there to make your adjustment to college life easier.

Step outside of your comfort zone.

When you were in high school, you most likely had a core group of friends who had known you for a long time. The beauty of college is being able to start over with people who you are just meeting as an adult. They don’t know about all the stupid and embarrassing things you may have done in kindergarten; they will only know what you want them to know about you. For this reason, try new things and don’t be afraid to try on new personalities. This is a great time to figure out not only who you are, but also who you want to be.

Use your resources.

Your dorm provides you with resident advisors (RAs) or freshman counselors (FCs). Make sure to attend those introductory dorm meetings that your RA or FC plans for you. It’s a good way to see who else is on your floor and to ask questions about dorm life. Your RA or FC is there for you—use him or her to your advantage.

Be safe.

Listen to your RA or FC about various safety tips around campus. Remember to stay with friends late at night and to avoid dangerous parts of your new town. When using the shared bathroom most freshmen have, wear shower shoes and try to be cautious about leaving your things in the bathroom, you never know who is going to do what with your toiletries.

Don’t forget to ENJOY it!

College is about having fun and making new friends as well as learning new things. Living in a dorm is a great way to do so. You will have friends on hand to order pizza with at 3am and study partners for finals. Do crazy things, take pictures, share funny stories—enjoy yourself. Just make sure you are safe and that you have fun. You are only young once!

Remember that your friends and parents are just a phone call away and that every person’s adjustment period is different. Take your time getting comfortable and above all else, be yourself. Your new friends will love you for it.
