Salam,

I’m going to answer your questions assuming that this is for testing/commissioning at the client’s different project sites (in this case, SCECO’s power-plants?). You can ask them if the job is for doing only testing in Al-Fanar’s own factory?

  1. Testing and commissioning = After any new equipment is installed (motor, generator … etc.), the contractor must do “checks” before starting this big machine (e.g. electrical power cable meggering test, instrument cable loop-checking … etc.), and then start the machine slowly in steps. It’s field job, excellent for learning. It’s best to start your career on the site so you can see things with your eyes, rather than an office job where you will only see drawings or diagrams of things you can’t understand.

  2. Yes, good experience IF they really involve you in the work. You must earn their trust before they let you touch something dangerous. You have to be very careful so you don’t hurt yourself or blow some expensive machine by missing some step.

  3. Yes. When you buy a small machine like an fridge for your kitchen, you just turn it on by a switch. But big machines in electrical plants have a whole procedure for properly starting up the first time. As long as there are projects, this role is required, but until now it’s mostly been foreigners working in field jobs with contracting companies (because it’s hard work, long-hours, different project sites, and because contractor companies don’t pay high salary/benefits like government companies).

  4. You can use this experience to go in the same commissioning job in bigger electrical contracting companies like:
    ABB, Siemens, Schneider, Wescosa …
or you can move into different role like (Project management, design engineering) for EPC contracting companies like:
Worleyparsons, Kentz, Fluor, Parsons, Bechtel, Mustang DHP …
or you can go to client Saudi companies (government, semi-government) where you might not do much technical job, but more administrative work (depends on company/department) like:
SCECO/SEC, Sabic, Aramco, Marafiq, Maaden, SWCC …
